affordable, community-led housing
That those members of our local community who want to live, work and stay in Masham but are forced to leave through lack of available low cost housing have access to affordable small rental units
In Masham we are lucky.
Unlike many market towns we have work available locally. Two family breweries and two agricultural feed firms employ local people. We are a strong farming community and have some visitor-focused businesses like Swinton Park Estate, another major local employer
BUT we have a problem.
In Masham we are lucky.
We live in a beautiful place with a long history and a strong community.
This makes people want to retire here, or have a second home here, or buy properties for holiday rental.
Properties sell quickly and for high sums. Smaller properties are snapped up for holiday rental leaving very few small, affordable units for rent by local people.
It means our young people have nowhere to move into as they become independent. It means they are forced to look to towns further away to live... and they then become part of another community, working there, bringing up families there, using their energy and enthusiasm there while Masham's average age grows older.
Masham loses our young people like this all the time. They are our heart. They are Masham's thriving future.
In Masham we are lucky.
We are strong, independent Yorkshire folk! We seek our own solutions. Did you know, we stayed designated as a town during government changes in the early 1900's because we had already sorted our own water, sewage, electricity and gas supplies!
Peacock & Verity Community Spaces - Community-Led Housing is our solution.
We intend to convert the two floors of residential space above the shop into 4 x one-bedroomed rental units.
Community-Led Housing enables a local community to work together to provide the affordable housing we need.
Harrogate Borough Council's Rural Housing Enabler helped us undertake a Housing Needs Survey in 2019.
It reinforced all the worries outlined above about the challenges of keeping young workers and families in Masham, but also reinforced our commitment to provide flats for these young people. You can read it here.
